Mask, 2021

Bronze, 10 x 13 x 10 cm

Reclaiming Magic, Summer Exhibition 2021, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 22 September - 2 January 20022

By casting a surgical mask into bronze, I transform it into an amulet, an object believed to ‘protect a person from trouble’. By eliminating the mask’s original functionality with the use of a different material, I emphasise the apotropaic status of the daily gesture of wearing a surgical mask.

Soap, fiberglass insulation, 50 x 40 x 34 cm

Installation view, solo exhibition, Soap Opera, DNA Project Box, Venice, 13 October - 3 December 2011

Soap Opera was a site-specific work made while in a ten day residency at the DNA Project Box, an artist-run space in Venice. I conceived the work while staying silent for the duration of the residency. In silence, memo- ries resurfaced very quickly, especially while being in a historical setting. The process of making the work was guided by an act of emotion-based memory retrieval. Upon conclusion of the residency, the work was destroyed. With this action I was exploring the idea of erasure of personal memories and collective amnesia when it comes to specific historical events.

" …There are no more mosquitoes... ", PART. I, II, III 2009

Solo exhibition,Lucie Fontaine, Milan, 28 October - 1 December 2009

Everybody believes the caretaker, and the smell of reheated tinned tripe hits you if you go up the stairs in apartment block A. It comes from the tenant on the fifth floor. She keeps her floral centrepiece of faded and worn-out flowers, like the ones on forgotten graves, on the balcony, or to be more exact, on what was the patio before turned into a closed annexe of her 70sqm flat. She always speaks about her centrepiece, says it’s a memento, pretends to shed a tear, but she was probably the one who bought it.

In any case, the last time the tinned tripe was past its due date, and the woman only realised when, once in her mouth, it formed a strange texture and stuck to her dentures. Now, if you meet her in the elevator, she kisses you and gives you a small holy picture.

Her dentures finished up amongst the flowers of the centrepiece.

The folded soil blanket, 1998/2009 Soil, 16 x 40 x 38 cm

Installation view, solo exhibition, ... there are no more mosquitoes... Part I, Lucie Fontaine, Milan, 28 October - 1 December 2009

The folded soil blanket requires daily care and can not be left alone for too long. Made out of fresh soil, it needs watering to prevent it from drying. With this work, I explore the idea of the presence of death in everyday life.
